Hollywood cinematographers wanted to adapt the novel Metro 2033, and the producers of the project were either Mark Johnson, who worked on Memory Diary and the Breaking Bad series, or the no less venerable Michael de Luca, who produced I Am Sam and "Social Network". The premiere date was even announced - February 25, 2020, but Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the book, refused to transfer the story from Moscow to Washington.
The events of dystopia unfold in 2033. After the Third World War, only ruins remained of human society. Where Moscow used to be, now there is only a ghost town, which was destroyed by radiation, and instead of the inhabitants of the capital, monsters roam the streets. People who were lucky enough to survive were forced to descend into the Moscow metro - the largest anti-nuclear bomb shelter on the planet. Now each station is a separate state, and each tunnel is fraught with uncharted knowledge and danger, inspiring genuine horror. The main character, Artem, lives at the VDNH station, and he will have to leave his shelter in order to save the station’s population, and, possibly, the surviving people as a whole.
Director and shooting
After a long search, Dmitry Glukhovsky still found filmmakers ready to leave the entourage of his novel and convey the nuances of fantastic dystopia as accurately as possible, without changing cities and continents. Representatives of the TV-3 television channel, TNT-PREMIER Studios and the Central Partnership film company took up work on the project. The TV-3 channel posted an official announcement of the start of work in August 2019 in its group in VK.
Hollywood filmmakers were very interested in adapting the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The main reason for breaking the contract and returning the rights to the author was the fact that American developers wanted to transfer the plot to Washington. Glukhovsky did not want such changes, he considered that the script was turning into something completely faceless due to the difference in mentality and a number of differences between countries, because of which the important part of the novel was completely lost:
"Many things simply would not have been possible to discover in Washington - Nazis, communists, black mutants. Washington is a black city, and this does not apply to the allusion covered in the book. What was a metaphor of xenophobia in general, and not a statement about representatives of African American culture, it wouldn’t work on the other side of the ocean. Instead of black mutants, the developers wanted to create some kind of monsters that didn’t look like humans, and because of this, the whole thread of the story presented in the book broke. It was important for me, as a convinced internationalist, to preserve xenophobia. "
The first statements of the dystopian producer, Valery Fedorovich, appeared in the media:
"We are happy that our company managed to conclude an agreement with the writer. His book was recognized worldwide, Metro 2033 managed to occupy its niche in modern science fiction and among computer gamers. The producers and representatives of Gazprom-Media Corporation consider the creation of the film "A dream project. We are ready to make it ambitious and ambitious, perhaps the best of all projects that we have ever launched. The holding is ready to invest money not only in the production of motion pictures, but also in its promotion in the world film distribution."
The film adaptation of the cult book Metro 2033 will be produced by Valery Fedorovich (Policeman from Rublevka, Chernobyl: Exclusion Zone, Sweet Life, Dead Lake) and Evgeny Nikishov (Mistresses, Real Boys, Crisis) tender age, "Close").
Domestic filmmakers report that they are ready to invest an unprecedented budget for domestic cinema in a project to promote it both at home and abroad. The film will be financed by the holding of Gazprom-Media.
